A setback levee along 2.71 km of the Ballycarrow estuary, moved 180 m inland. Peak water level for 312 homes is 0.62 m lower.
The problem
The old Ballycarrow levee ran right along the estuary channel. With a high tide in front and a river flood behind, the water had nowhere to spread, and 312 homes sat below the level it could reach.
What we built
With Ballycarrow County Council, under agreement BC-2024-051, we built a new levee 180 m inland along 2.71 km of the estuary and opened the old one. The land in between now floods at the highest tides and gives the estuary room.
Level sensors on both sides of the new levee record every tide and every flood. For the design event, peak water level at the homes is 0.62 m lower than before the works. The council receives the readings every month, as the contract requires.
